I have a user running Google Chrome on Windows Vista for whom our chat is refusing to load. She sees the rotating circle icon, but the room never opens.

I've had her follow the procedure listed elsewhere on the forum here (clearing the Java cache). She's tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java. She's even uninstalled and reinstalled her browser. There have been multiple reboots during the process.

In her Java control panel, in the cache viewer, her applet is listed at only 1.2KB, whereas mine says 1.5KB. If she looks at the Resources screen it also says 1.2KB, but Cached in the top-right corner reads 1.5KB. Is this mismatch a Vista thing, or indicative of her actual problem? I'm running Windows 7, so things might not be the same.

Enabling the Java Console, all she gets from trying to load our chat is this:

Quote

Java Plug-in 10.5.1.255
Using JRE version 1.7.0_05-b05 Java HotSpot™ Client VM
User home directory = C:\Users\XXXX
----------------------------------------------------
c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
o: trigger logging
q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>
----------------------------------------------------

It doesn't go any further.

Trying a different chat which also runs AddOn 9, she gets a little more, but it still doesn't work:

More info: The user has now tried uninstalling Java, rebooting, reinstalling Java to a whole new subdirectory, and still the chat does not load.

Chat works perfectly from a Windows 7 laptop on the same network,.

Hi BigRed, we all were in the same boat here - could not load our chat rooms.

I am using W/7 too, and Firefox as browser. Following Greg's suggestions I took these actions, and it worked. I have to admit though my room's loading slower because of the newest Java... but it IS loading.

Here what Greg suggested and what worked for me... follow these steps carefully:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If a member has installed the latest java (7 update 5) ask them to try the following.

Close all browsers and then try the following;
1. Open your computers control panel.
2. Double click the java coffee cup.
3. Click the "Settings" button.
4. Click the "Delete Files" button.
5. Check ALL things to be deleted including "Installed Applications and Applets".
6. Click "OK".

Once this has been done open browser and see if it works.

Good luck!

Hi Laura,

This is exactly the procedure the user has followed several times to no avail. I found Greg's advice the other day and it fixed most other users apart from just one :(

Thanks :)

Further information:

It seems the Skype plugin was making the browser freeze when it tried loading AddOn applets from some sites and not others. The user has removed the Skype plugin and the chat has loaded.

Previously, though, one chat was loading and the other was not. I've checked that I'm using the latest embed code direct from the control panel, so... Still a mystery, I think. The Skype thing might be a red herring.

Wow! a big surprise about Skype. I am glad you got it figured out. Good job.
