I don't understand why you need to suddenly downgrade to phpbb, your IPB forum will still continue to work and you can continue to use it.

Also sigmachat will already work and continue to work with IPB.

First off, let me say that I think Digital Monkey's advice is good.

If you need to switch to phpBB, we do have some authentication scripts available in the user control panel for download, and we intend to develop better integration/authentication scripts in the near future :)

For right now, with forum integration, your best off with either vBulletin 3.x.x or IPB 1.3.1+, 2.0.x+

Will the new chat work with the old phpBB integration script?

Not sure why you would consider phpBB2 a "downgrade" myself. I compared phpBB2, IBP, UBBThreads, and vBulletin extensively and each one has it's own advantages and disadvantages depending on your needs and preferences. Any one of them can be considered a serious forum script and in fact, the largest forum on the net these days www.gaiaonline.com runs on phpBB2 with just short of 1 million users and 190 million posts.
There's no place like 127.0.0.1
